Epitaph XVI. — For Sarpedon

by Decimus Magnus Ausonius c. AD 310 – c. 395

Translated by Hugh G. Evelyn-White (1919–21) · From Book VI. — Epitaphs on the Heroes who took part in the Trojan War

Death & Dying

I am Lycian Sarpedon, the seed of Jove: in virtue of my father's godhead I hoped for heaven; yet I am buried in this tomb though bewailed with tears of blood. Ah, iron-hearted Fates! He also suffers grief who can prevent it.
