Book X, Epigram 80 (Ker)
Translated by Walter C. A. Ker (1919–20) · From Epigrams (Loeb, 1919–20)
Eros weeps whenever he inspects cups of spotted murrine, or slaves, or a citrus-wood table finer than usual, and heaves groans from the bottom of his chest because he — wretched man — cannot buy all the whole Saepta' and carry it home. How many act like Eros! But with dry eyes the greater part laugh at his tears — and have them in their hearts.
