Love

Fears of Mature Maidenhood

by Shi Jing (The Book of Songs) poems c. 1000–600 BC; compilation traditionally ascribed to Confucius

Translated by William Jennings (1891) · From The Shi King (Jennings, 1891), Part I, Book ii

Love

Though shaken be the damson-tree,
Left on it yet are seven, O.
Te gentlemen who care for me,
Though shaken be the damson-tree,
Yet three are still remaining, O.

Ye gentlemen who care for me,
Ah, shaken is the damson-tree,
And all are in the basket, O.
Ye gentlemen who care for me,
Your question — would ye ask it, O!
