Maxims of Theognis: Consider: the danger, look you
Translated by Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856) · From Hesiod, Callimachus and Theognis (Bohn, 1856)
Consider: the danger, look you, stands on a razor’s edge: at one moment you shall have much: at another far fewer possessions: so that you neither become exceeding rich in possessions, no, nor thrust yourself into much want-of-means.
This translation is printed as prose in its source edition.
Codex Note
Literal prose translation by the Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856), printed as prose: the plain-sense companion to Frere’s verse version. Banks’s hyphenated compounds are his own.
