Neidhart von Reuenthal

c. 1180 – c. 1240

Neidhart von Reuenthal, a Bavarian knight who later lived at the Babenberg court in Vienna, created the genre of the village courtship song with its summer and winter songs.

Seven of his songs appear here in Frank C. Nicholson’s translation, Old German Love Songs (1907), made from the minnesingers of the twelfth to fourteenth centuries.

  1. Nunc Pede libero pulsanda Tellus
  2. Spring, the Sweet Spring
  3. The Dance
  4. The Message from Abroad
  5. Solvitur acris Hiems
  6. Facilis Descensus
  7. Maecenas, atavis edite Regibus
