The Plutus

A comedy first produced at Athens in 388 BC

by Aristophanes

Translated by Benjamin Bickley Rogers (1924)

Chremylus, a good man who has stayed poor, follows a blind beggar home on the advice of Apollo's oracle and finds him to be Wealth himself. With his slave Cario he sets out to cure the god's sight so that the honest may prosper, braves the arguments of Poverty, has Wealth healed at the temple of Asclepius, and sees the world turned upside down: an informer is stripped, an old woman is dropped by her young lover, and Hermes and the priest of Zeus come begging for a living.
