Translated by W. R. Paton (1916–18) · From The Greek Anthology (Loeb, vol. I, 1916)

Religion

I am the nine books of Agathias’ Daphniad, and he who composed me dedicates me to thee, Aphrodite. For I am not so dear to the Muses as to Love, since I treat of the mysteries of so many loves. In return for his pains he begs thee to grant him either not to love or to love oné who soon consents.
