Love

The Return Home, 70

by Heinrich Heine 1797–1856

Translated by Edgar Alfred Bowring (1908) · From Pictures of Travel: The Return Home (1823-24)

Love

We travelled alone in the gloomy
Post-chaise the whole of the night;
Each lean’d on the other’s bosom,
And jested with hearts so light.

When morning dawn’d upon us,
My child, how we did stare,
For the blind passenger, Amor,
Was sitting between us there!
