Book V, Epigram 1 (Ker)
Translated by Walter C. A. Ker (1919–20) · From Epigrams (Loeb, 1919–20)
This to thee, Caesar, whether them art enjoying the hills of Alba dear to Pallas, and dost look forth, here on Trivia's fane, there on the waves of Thetis; or whether the truth-speaking Sisters learn the oracles thou dost inspire, where, hard by the town, sleeps the ocean's level wave; whether Aeneas' nurse delights thee, or the daughter of the Sun, or gleaming Anxur with its healthful waters, this book I send, O thou blest guardian and saviour of the state, whose safety assures us that Jove is grateful. Do thou but receive it; I will deem that thou hast read it, and in my pride have the joy of my Gallic trustfulness.
