Pope Gregory the Great

c. 540–604

Gregory was born at Rome about 540 and became pope in 590. In 596 he sent Augustine on his mission to Britain, and he died in 604. He is counted among the four Latin Doctors of the Church.

Several hymns have been ascribed to him. This page holds the one that John Brownlie (1896) gives to him without a doubt, Lucis Creator optime, in Brownlie's English version.

  1. Thou, blest Creator of the light
  2. Primo die quo Trinitas
  3. Nocte surgentes vigilemus omnes
  4. Ecce iam noctis tenuatur umbra
  5. Lucis Creator optime
  6. Audi benigne Conditor
