Rabindranath Tagore
Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941) was a Bengali poet, songwriter, playwright, novelist and educator, born into a prominent family in Calcutta. He wrote chiefly in Bengali, founded a school at Santiniketan, and in 1913 became the first non-European to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.
The poems here are his own English prose renderings of his Bengali verse: Gitanjali (Song Offerings, 1912), the devotional poems that W. B. Yeats introduced to English readers, and The Gardener (1915), a gathering of love lyrics and poems of youth and life. Tagore translated them himself, and the English is often freer than the Bengali, abridging or paraphrasing as he saw fit. Two further books of 1916 are also gathered here: Stray Birds, his book of short aphoristic poems, and Fruit-Gathering, a further collection of lyrics. The Crescent Moon (1913), his book of poems about children and their mothers, is gathered here too.
