Death & Dying

Mysterious, Enchanting

by Sándor Petőfi 1823–1849

Translated by William N. Loew (1912) · From Cypress Leaves from the Grave of Dear Ethel

Death & Dying

Mysterious, enchanting sound!

As if the vesper bell, which fills the air,
The pious village folk would call

Aloud, with solemn voice, to prayer.
It is the sad sweet memory

Of a sweet girl which rings within my soul,
The maiden young and beautiful

Over whose grave my tears incessant roll?
