Jalal al-Din Rumi
Jalal al-Din Rumi (1207–1273) was a Persian Sufi poet, born at Balkh, who settled at Konya in Anatolia, where he taught and wrote for the rest of his life. After he met the wandering dervish Shams of Tabriz, his devotion poured out in lyric odes (ghazals) addressed to his master and, through him, to God, and the collection is named the Divan of Shams of Tabriz.
The English versions here are R. A. Nicholson’s translations of forty-eight odes from the Divan, published at Cambridge in 1898. Nicholson printed the Persian beside his English; only the English is given here.
