Nature

Gece Yarısı

by Ahmet Haşim c. 1885–1933

From Göl Saatleri (1921). Original Turkish text.

NatureThe Mind

Ve ansızın suya etmekle mâh-ı dûr sukut
Miyâh-ı ruhumu andırdı safha-i tâlâb:
O ruh içinde muzî bir garîb nilüfer
Bütün elemlerin üstünde müncelî ter ü tâb...

The title means 'Midnight'. One of four short poems on the hours of the day printed together in the magazine Servet-i Fünûn (no. 1054, 4 August 1911) and later collected in Göl Saatleri. When the distant moon falls into the water, the pond becomes like the poet's soul, where a strange shining water lily floats above every grief.
