Ahmet Haşim was born in Baghdad in the mid-1880s (sources differ on the year) and came to Istanbul at about twelve, after his mother's death. He published two books of verse, Göl Saatleri ('Lake Hours', 1921) and Piyale ('The Wine Cup', 1926), made of short, musical poems about evening, water and light. He died in Istanbul on 4 June 1933. The texts below are the original Turkish, taken from tr.wikisource.org.
