Holman Day

1865–1935

Holman Francis Day (1865–1935) was an American journalist, poet and novelist, born at Vassalboro, Maine, and long associated with Auburn, Maine. He wrote humorous and sympathetic dialect verse about Yankee farmers, fishermen, lumbermen and river-drivers, which earned him the title of the 'Kipling of Maine'.

Up in Maine: Stories of Yankee Life Told in Verse (1900) and Pine Tree Ballads (1902), both published in Boston by Small, Maynard & Company, made his name. He later turned to novels and plays, and several of his works were adapted for film.
