Mary Mapes Dodge

1831–1905

Mary Mapes Dodge (1831–1905) was an American author and editor, born in New York City. She made her name with the children's novel Hans Brinker; or, The Silver Skates (1865), a story of life in Holland, and wrote verse and prose for young readers throughout her career.

From 1873 until her death she edited St. Nicholas, the illustrated monthly for children, which she built into one of the leading American magazines of its kind. Rhymes and Jingles (1875) gathers the nursery verses, fables and songs she had written for it and for other periodicals.
