José-Maria de Heredia

1842–1905

José-Maria de Heredia (1842–1905) was born in Cuba of Spanish-descended family and educated in France, where he settled and became one of the leading Parnassian poets. He published his poems slowly, in periodicals, and was elected to the Académie française in 1894.

His single book, Les Trophées (1893), gathers some hundred and eighteen sonnets on Greek and Roman antiquity, the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the conquistadors, the Orient and the sea. These versions are by the San Francisco jurist Edward Robeson Taylor, from the fifth edition of 1913.
